Richard Coke: Texan is Rosser Newton's biography of the fifteenth governor of Texas, published on November 4, 2024, by Stoney Creek Publishing Group, a member of the Texas Book Consortium affiliated with Texas A&M University Press.

The biography draws extensively from primary source material, including personal correspondence, family records, legislative debates, constitutional convention proceedings, newspapers, census records, and city directories from the period. Many of these historical sources became significantly more accessible through modern digitization, allowing Newton to examine original records in greater depth than had previously been practical. The result is a detailed account of Texas government, politics, and society during the second half of the nineteenth century.

The subject

Richard Coke served as the fifteenth governor of Texas and later spent eighteen years as a United States senator. As an indirect descendant of Governor Coke, Newton became interested in the historical record surrounding both the man and the Reconstruction era, believing that many aspects of Coke's life and leadership had received limited scholarly attention. His research began during his years at Vanderbilt University and grew over decades into the archival project that produced the book.

Recognition

Senate Resolution 520The Texas Senate honored Newton during the 89th Texas Legislature for preserving and expanding knowledge of Texas history through Richard Coke: Texan. Introduced by Senator Hall, the resolution was adopted without objection, with every member of the Senate joining as a co-author.
